Ford Motor Wraps Off Its 2011 Explorer

Moments before a white 2011 Ford Explorer was driven over a mountain of dirt at Ford’s world headquarters in Dearborn, company CFO Lewis Booth said the iconic SUV is coming to market just as Ford’s turnaround plans are gaining momentum.

Booth said that The profitability of the company is being driven by new products. I think it all started with the launch of the Ford Fusion at the beginning of last year. Today, I think the return of a real icon, the all "new Explorer" is consistent with the reinvention of the company.

Ford Motor is set to take the wraps off its 2011 Ford Explorer sports utility vehicle later today. It is the first major overhaul of the vehicle since its introduction some 20 years ago. The new design, which utilizes more modern unit body construction rather than old school body on frame layout, is lighter and promises much better fuel economy. The new Explorer is expected to sell better than the outgoing one, but Ford isn't anticipating selling the half a million units a year the automaker once sold during the heyday of the SUV in the 1990s.The 2011 Explorer is expected to be in dealer showrooms by the end of the year. Ford is marketing the 2011 Explorer as a fuel efficient SUV that is capable of fulfilling the needs of most families.

Ford reveals the 2011 Ford Explorer today in cities across the U.S. At Ford's world headquarters in Dearborn, employees and dealers were on hand for the party on Michigan Avenue as the new vehicle made its debut climbing a dirt hill and coming down.

Ford executives said today that the 2011 Explorer will get 30% better fuel efficiency than the outgoing model with a turbocharged EcoBoost engine and 25% better fuel economy with a standard V6 engine.
